Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - Junior Professorship for Medieval History

Junior Professorship for Medieval History

The Junior Professorship for Medieval History offers courses and research opportunities across the entire spectrum of Medieval History. Our main area of research on Mediterranean courts of the Iberian Peninsula during the High and Late Middle Ages serves to strengthen the Department of History’s European profile. Medieval courts of the Mediterranean were sites where existing cultural boundaries disappeared, new hybrid cultures were formed, knowledge blossomed and seeds of societal change were sown. The interest in these dynamic processes is often reflected in historical research and scholarship, such as the work of the George Circle.

Current debates on globalization andglobal history have led to the heightened study of migration processes. Questions on the history of education and the history of knowledge also play a contributing role to these debates. The Junior Professorship also dedicates considerable study to the works of the Bishops Rather of Verona and Atto of Vercelli, who elaborated new ways to describe the present.

During the winter semester 2013/14 Barbara Schlieben takes a sabbatical term. PD Dr. Gregor Rohmann (g.rohmann@em.uni-frankfurt.de) will stand in for her in this time.
