Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - Chair for the History of Science

Chair for the History of Science

The history of science is dedicated to the study of scientific knowledge and seeks to understand both the historical development and nature of scientific thinking as well as fundamental scientific concepts. To expand the history of science to the history of knowledge, the unit consults various institutionalized forms of science, from the university and academies to scientific collections, as well as everyday practices of laymen and technical skills of specialists. Students within the unit for the History of Science will examine non-traditional materials including document footnotes, laboratory tables and exhibition furniture alongside classic source material such as books, formulas and scientific specimens. A recent shift towards the materiality and mediality of knowledge validates how essential a differentiated understanding of tangible objects is to scholarship. The shift also stands to show that only after the historical evaluation of an object do the methods and purpose of its construction become discernable.
