Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - Department of History

Application

Who can apply for an Erasmus stay?

In principle, all students of the IfG can apply. The Institute of History maintains partnerships throughout Europe with more than 150 institutions. Depending on the partner university, BA students, MA students and even PhD students can apply. Teachers who are interested in an exchange should contact the Erasmus Coordinator directly. Under Partner Universities you will find a detailed list of who can apply where and for what.

The following requirements must be met:
  • Enrolment at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin for full-time studies or as a secondary listener
  • BA students: min. one completed semester including the introductory module at HU
  • Existing bilateral agreement between the IfG and the partner university
  • Sufficient knowledge of the language of instruction of the partner university, i.e. at least B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Non-subject students (subjects other than history) can also apply. However, your applications will be the last to be considered. Priority is always given to students of the IfG, but the exchange places are only offered at the historical institutes of the partner universities. The organisation is the responsibility of the applicant and not the Erasmus office.

Should the demand for individual exchange places be greater than the contractually agreed exchange quota in the respective subject, the places will be allocated according to a performance ranking (letter of motivation, grades, language, intercultural competence and commitment, subject semester).

It should be noted that very good academic performance or adherence to the standard period of study are not prerequisites for a successful application. As a rule, the capacities of Erasmus locations are not fully utilised and most applications are therefore accepted.

How and when do I apply?

Find out more about the many exchange options in Europe from our partner universities. There you will find general information for those interested in Erasmus about the required language level, places in halls of residence, course choices and much more. Once you have decided on one or more partner universities, you can submit your application by the annual deadline.

Your application must be submitted by 31 January digitally (erasmus.geschichte@hu-berlin.de). This deadline applies to the entire following academic year (winter semester and summer semester).

Only complete applications will be considered for selection. Only the short report and the language certificate can be submitted after prior consultation with the Erasmus office.

What documents do I have to submit for my application?

  • Application form of the institute (PDF, Word)
  • Letter of motivation (you can find more information here)
  • Curriculum vitae in tabular form
  • Current Transcript (AGNES printout)
  • BA-certificate for Master students (if applicable)
  • Matriculation certificate
  • Language certificate of the language of instruction (you can find more information here)
  • Short letter of reference from a lecturer of the History Department (max. 1 page). Not needed for European History students!

→ First-semester students who are unable to provide such an assessment should contact the Erasmus office in advance by e-mail.

What happens to my application?

All applications received by 31 January will be considered for the following academic year.

The applications will be forwarded to the responsible Erasmus coordinator Dr. Benjamin Conrad, who will then decide on them and return the results with the applications to the Erasmus office.

Both positive and negative decisions will be sent by email by the end of the winter semester. Applicants must then accept or reject their places within a period of one to two weeks.

How does the selection and nomination process work?

The selection procedure for the next academic mobility year takes place in the faculties or institutes. Therefore, your application will first be checked for completeness by the Erasmus Office of the Institute of History. If the demand exceeds the supply of the contractually agreed places, the places will be awarded according to a performance ranking. The letter of motivation is given the greatest importance.

All successful applicants will then be nominated at the host university of their choice. Your host university will then contact you by e-mail with further instructions on registration, course selection and matriculation. You may have to submit your application there again. Please note the deadlines set by the partner university, for which we are not responsible!
