Bible and Women. La Querelle Des Femmes International Colloquium

International Colloquium, 12.12. - 13.12.2019, Facultad de Letras,
Universidad De Castilla-La Mancha, Ciudad Real/Almagro

A number of studies have highlighted the importance of biblical quotations andscriptural arguments in the “Querelle des femmes”, the famous on-going debateon the role of women and men throughout the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries. Nevertheless, the weight of religion and more specifically of the Bible in the “Querelle des femmes“ is scarcely addressed by the historiography dedicated to the topic. To this day, there is no systematic enquiry that deals in detail with the phenomenon in its various manifestations. In light of this observation, this workshop’s aim is to develop an innovative volume for the series The Bible and Women (ed. by Christiana de Groot, Irmtraud Fischer, Mercedes Navarro and Adriana Valerio). It will allow us to appreciate the reception of the Bible, its uses, and its influence in the context of a crucial moment of the social, political, and cultural history of European societies. Moreover, by focusing on religious and biblical aspects, a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of the political, cultural, and religious sides of the “Querelle des Femmes” will be gained.
