Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - Department of History

Application and matriculation

1. Application

Before you begin, please study the online application and accompanying information available on the International Office website.

As soon as your university has nominated you, you will be asked to register with MoveOn by email. To ensure that your application can be fully considered:

  • Be sure to include your subject (History) and ISCED (0222 - History).
  • Indicate your start and end semesters, as well as the total number of semesters.
  • Make sure that you specify the History Department (Institut für Geschichtswissenschaften) / Faculty of Philosophy as a subordinate institution.
  • Take the mandatory C-test OR submit a language certificate to the Incoming Team and the Erasmus Office of the IfG that proves that your German language skills are at least at GER level B2.
  • Indicate whether you would like a place in a student residence and whether you would like to take part in a preparatory language course.

Then fill out your application thoroughly and completely in MoveOn. Offers cannot be extended if information is missing or incorrectly entered on the application form.

When your application is complete, you will receive an email confirmation. Print it out, sign it, have it signed by your home university, and send it back to HU. More information about the procedure can be found here.

2. Matriculation

Your enrolment date will be announced in your confirmation. This is the absolute latest day on which you should plan to arrive in Berlin: you must be able to report to the university on this date or forfeit your acceptance.

If you have registered in advance for a preparatory language course, you must have arrived in Berlin by the beginning of September. Matriculation days usually take place in the last week of September (winter semester) and in the last week of March (summer semester). Here you can read which documents you need to bring with you.

After matriculation, you are officially enrolled as a Humboldt University student. You will receive your Campus Card including your Berlin ABC public transport ticket and the integrated Mensa card.

If you have any questions regarding your application or matriculation, please contact the Incoming Team of the HU International Office.
